Understanding Motion Sensing Basics
Most modern motion detectors rely on Passive Infrared (PIR) technology. All living beings emit infrared heat, and PIR sensors use pyroelectric crystals to generate electrical signals when they sense a change in infrared energy—forming the foundation of infrared detection in everyday devices. When someone walks through the sensing area, their body heat triggers this shift instantly.
But PIR sensors have an inherent limitation: on their own, they can “see” only through a very narrow infrared cone. The sensing window is just a few millimeters wide—almost like trying to observe an entire room through a drinking straw.
This constraint is exactly why PIR alone isn’t enough.
